The Importance of Self Care

The Importance of Self Care

In a fast-paced society where many of us constantly feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day, it’s essential to pause and make room for ourselves. Technology has made it easier to accomplish more, but it has also led us to cram as much as possible into short periods of time.

Oftentimes, we put ourselves on the back burner, prioritizing everything else—work, friends, family, and obligations—while forgetting about our own needs. But why do we have a tendency to neglect ourselves? If we don’t make our well-being a priority, it can lead to burnout, increased symptoms of depression and anxiety, and a sense of disconnection. Over time, we may feel less productive and even apathetic toward activities we once enjoyed.

To reduce the risk of burnout and emotional exhaustion, I make a conscious effort to incorporate self-care into my routine and protect my mental health as much as possible, knowing that I have to and want to show up for others. As a helper, I recognize the importance of taking time to restore and rejuvenate, which can look different for everyone, including myself, depending on how I’m feeling.

Sometimes, self-care means going for a run or engaging in physical activity to clear my mind. Other times, it’s intentionally vegging out and giving myself permission to rest. It also means getting therapy and creating space to process my own thoughts and emotions. For me, self-care can also be spending quality time with loved ones, playing with my rescue dogs, or treating myself to a milk tea boba (I consider myself a boba connoisseur).

Prioritizing these moments helps me stay balanced and fully present for both myself and the people I care about.

Remember, you matter, and so does your self-care! Practicing self-care may take practice, but just know it is completely worth it.

What are some ways you incorporate self-care?
